Bible verses for courage, discipline and perseverance
These passages are some of the most helpful for men building consistency in their faith. Each verse below is quoted word for word from the World English Bible (WEB), followed by a short explanation in plain English. The explanations are FORGED commentary, not Scripture.
Courage
Joshua 1:9 — God's command to Joshua comes with a promise: you are not facing what is ahead alone. Courage here is not the absence of fear but trust in God's presence.
2 Timothy 1:7 — Fear is not the spirit God gives. Paul pairs power with love and self-control — courage that is steady rather than reckless.
Discipline and self-control
1 Corinthians 9:24–27 — Paul uses the picture of an athlete in training. Discipline means running with purpose rather than aimlessly.
1 Timothy 4:7–8 — Training in godliness is worth even more than physical training, because it has value for this life and the next.
Hebrews 12:11 — Discipline is rarely enjoyable in the moment. Its fruit comes later.
Perseverance
Galatians 6:9 — Keep doing good even when you do not see results yet. The harvest comes in its season.
Philippians 3:13–14 — Let go of what is behind, including past failures, and keep pressing forward.
Isaiah 40:31 — Strength is renewed by waiting on the LORD, not by willpower alone.

Scripture · World English Bible
“Haven’t I commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Don’t be afraid. Don’t be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.”
Joshua 1:9 (WEB)
“For God didn’t give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-control.”
2 Timothy 1:7 (WEB)
“Don’t you know that those who run in a race all run, but one receives the prize? Run like that, that you may win. Every man who strives in the games exercises self-control in all things. Now they do it to receive a corruptible crown, but we an incorruptible. I therefore run like that, not aimlessly. I fight like that, not beating the air, but I beat my body and bring it into submission, lest by any means, after I have preached to others, I myself should be rejected.”
1 Corinthians 9:24–27 (WEB)
“But refuse profane and old wives’ fables. Exercise yourself toward godliness. For bodily exercise has some value, but godliness has value in all things, having the promise of the life which is now, and of that which is to come.”
1 Timothy 4:7–8 (WEB)
“Let us not be weary in doing good, for we will reap in due season, if we don’t give up.”
Galatians 6:9 (WEB)
“Brothers, I don’t regard myself as yet having taken hold, but one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 3:13–14 (WEB)
“But those who wait for the LORD will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.”
Isaiah 40:31 (WEB)
