Prayer
How to pray when you don't know where to start
Many men feel awkward praying: unsure what to say, worried about saying it wrong, or distracted after thirty seconds. Prayer is not a performance. It is honest conversation with God, and Jesus gave a simple model for it. Here is how to begin.
What prayer is (and isn't)
Prayer is talking to God and listening for Him. It does not need special words, a certain posture or a set length. Jesus warned against praying to impress people and told His followers to pray privately to the Father (Matthew 6:6).
Even when you don't know what to pray, Scripture says the Spirit helps our weakness (Romans 8:26). You are not doing this alone.
A simple pattern to start
- Thank: name one specific thing you are grateful for.
- Admit: be honest about one thing you got wrong or are struggling with.
- Ask: bring one request for yourself and one for someone else.
- Listen: sit in silence for a minute. You don't have to fill it.
Use the Lord's Prayer as a map
When the disciples asked how to pray, Jesus gave them a short prayer (Matthew 6:9–13). You can pray it word for word, or pause after each line and put it in your own words: honouring God, asking for His will, daily needs, forgiveness, and help against temptation.
When your mind wanders
Every praying person gets distracted. When it happens, notice it and return without frustration. Short prayers prayed often are better than long prayers you dread.
Praying out loud, writing your prayer, or walking while you pray can help you focus. A timer also helps: start with three minutes.
Quiet prayer in FORGED
FORGED's Spirit pillar offers a 3, 5 or 10-minute prayer timer that dims the screen, with a guided prompt, your own words, or silence. Prayer is never scored. The free What Do You Need? protocols give you a verse, a short plain-English line and one action for moments like anger, discouragement or fear.
Scripture · World English Bible
“But you, when you pray, enter into your inner room, and having shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret, and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.”
Matthew 6:6 (WEB)
“Pray like this: ‘Our Father in heaven, may your name be kept holy. Let your Kingdom come. Let your will be done, as in heaven, so on earth. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our debts, as we also forgive our debtors. Bring us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the Kingdom, the power, and the glory forever. Amen.’”
Matthew 6:9–13 (WEB)
“In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus.”
Philippians 4:6–7 (WEB)
“In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses, for we don’t know how to pray as we ought. But the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings which can’t be uttered.”

Common questions
How long should I pray as a beginner?
Start with three to five minutes. A short, regular prayer time builds the habit better than an occasional long one.
Do I have to pray out loud?
No. You can pray silently, out loud, or in writing. Many people find praying out loud or writing helps them focus.
What if I don't know what to say?
Use the Lord's Prayer line by line, or the pattern thank, admit, ask, listen. Romans 8:26 says the Spirit helps when we don't know how to pray.
Is there a right way to pray?
Jesus emphasised sincerity over form (Matthew 6:5–8). Honest words matter more than impressive ones.
